OUR PROJECTS

Cockburn Street

Explore our recent project on Cockburn Street in Edinburgh’s historic Old Town, where we carried out full window restoration work. We adhered to conservation requirements and Grade A listing standards throughout the project. Review the key details below to gain insights into our approach and meticulous attention to revitalising the windows in this historic property

Works Carried Out

Window Restoration

In this project, we focused on reviving and renovating the existing windows without resorting to completely new replacements. This involved reviving existing sashes, ensuring longevity through careful repairs, guaranteeing smooth operation with premium materials, meticulously handling exterior restoration from sanding to primer, preserving authenticity with traditional pointing and ironmongery, and refreshing both interior and exterior with a fresh paint finish.

Renovation of Existing Cases

We undertook comprehensive renovation work on existing cases, including the removal of any rotten timbers such as sills, facings, and casements. Our expert team repaired casements and pockets, ensuring the structural integrity of the windows for years to come.

Sash Cord Replacement

All the sash cords were replaced with durable nylon-core cotton cords, ensuring smooth operation and long-lasting performance.

Exterior Restoration

We carefully sanded the exterior of the existing window frames, upgraded the weights to balance the new sashes, and applied a primer undercoat for enhanced protection against the elements.

Traditional Pointing & Ironmongery

Traditional techniques were used for pointing, involving the removal of the old pointing, application of expanding foam, and re-mastic with traditional sand mastic. Moreover, new ironmongery was installed, including a simplex system for bottom sashes to swing inwards, utilising traditional brass fittings to maintain the property's authentic character.

Finishing Touches

To finish the project, we used an oil-based paint for exterior protection and a satin finish for the interiors, ensuring both aesthetic appeal and durability.

At The Sash & Case Restoration Company, we are dedicated to safeguarding historical buildings while integrating contemporary upgrades to enhance both functionality and energy conservation.
